American Financial Benefits Center Encourages Borrowers to Make Moves to Improve Student Loan Situation

EMERYVILLE, Calif., March 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Big cities may be perceived as hubs promising professional advancement with endless opportunities. However, rural towns can offer professional value, as well, and are starting to offer incentives to lure individuals and families to move in. Those incentives may include free land to build a house on or help with student loans. However, American Financial Benefits Center (AFBC) reminds student loan borrowers that if they would rather not uproot their lives for those financial temptations, they may be able to improve their financial situation at home through income-driven repayment plans. The company helps its clients apply for and stay enrolled in such plans so that they have more financial freedom to focus on their financial goals.

"Student loan borrowers may do some strange things to get rid of their debt," said Sara Molina, Manager at AFBC. "Moving to a small town might not be that strange, but it can be a drastic move and might not be right for everyone."

Small, rural towns offering student loan relief do so in an attempt to revive the town. These towns may be struggling economically, even if they appear to be doing fine. Towns like Niagara Falls, New York, as well as many counties in Kansas labeled Rural Opportunity Zones, are offering new residents thousands of dollars of student loan repayment when they move in.

However, small town life is not for everyone. Some individuals simply prefer bustling city streets and other perks of city life. And that's okay. Federal student loan borrowers who need assistance tackling their student loans, but who decide that packing up and moving to a small town isn't the best move for them, should consider federal repayment programs.

There are several income-driven repayment plans (IDRs) that calculate monthly payments on income and family size. Some borrowers may even see a payment as low as zero dollars. Any reduction in student loan payment amount can potentially allow borrowers to increase their focus on other financial goals such as saving for an emergency fund, paying down other debt, or saving up to buy a house.

"No matter where you live, it's important that you make your student loans work for you," said Molina. "If payments are too high, IDRs might help. We've certainly gotten good feedback from AFBC clients whose payments are now affordable thanks to IDRs we helped them apply for. But if small-town life sounds appealing to you, by all means, take that leap."
