Assisi Animal Health Predicts 4 Trends in the Veterinary Industry in 2017
PINEHURST, N.C., Jan. 23, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Assisi Animal Health developed the Assisi Loop®, an effective non-pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory device (NPAID®) that works as a PEMF therapy for animals. The Loop helps heal wounds and relieve pain in horses, cats, and dogs.
Now that the New Year is in full swing, new pros, cons, challenges, and opportunities arise. Looking forward to this year, Assisi Animal Health predicts 4 trends in the veterinary industry in 2017.
1. Global Dental Guidelines. This year, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) is planning to release the first ever Global Dental Guidelines. Among the most common medical conditions veterinary professionals encounter, dental and oral issues need to be more adequately addressed. According to Brook A. Niemiec, DVM, Dipl. AVDC, Dipl. EVDC, FACD, a chairperson of the WSAVA, setting industry-wide guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases will serve as a "gold standard."
2. New Technology. The veterinary industry is moving in tandem with many other industries, which is to say technology is increasingly important. One such trend is the expansion of wearable and "smart" products for pets. Similar to human products, wearable pet products will enable pet owners and vets to monitor a pet's nutrition, hydration, exercise habits, sleep patterns and geographical location. Along with this new technology comes a wealth of data that can be extremely useful for veterinary professionals and pet owners alike.
3. Rise in Pet Insurance. According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA), 65% of U.S. households own a pet. Among these households, a relatively small percentage have insurance for their pets. However, with veterinary care costs steadily increasing, the U.S. pet insurance market is predicted to experience steady growth between now and 2020.
4. Changes in Opioid Prescribing Guidelines. In 2016, the CDC issued a new set of recommended guidelines for medical professionals of any kind that prescribe opioid-based medicines in response to the opioid epidemic in the United States. The new guidelines require affected practices to utilize a database to monitor their prescribing habits to avoid abuse. While the animals themselves are not going to be abusing medications, their owners are the concern. This type of program has been implemented in New Hampshire and has already shown promise, resulting in a significantly lower number of opioid doses prescribed.
Assisi Animal Health's clinical solutions complete the Circle of Care®—the collaboration of veterinarians and owners in animal health and healing. Our company helps veterinary professionals and owners improve the quality of life for companion animals using the Assisi Loop, the non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical healing device that is based on the same FDA-cleared technology used on humans. The device uses low-level pulses of electromagnetic energy to reduce pain and swelling, and to enhance recovery.
