Defeat of Millstone nuclear bill is a victory for Connecticut consumers
HARTFORD, Conn., June 8, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Connecticut Petroleum Council today applauded action by the Connecticut General Assembly to reject legislation that would give special treatment to the Millstone nuclear power plant by forcing consumers in the state to pay more for electricity.
"Defeat of this one-sided legislation is a win for Connecticut consumers," said Executive Director Steve Guveyan. "Giving special treatment to the Millstone nuclear power plant would raise costs for consumers and deny the state the benefits of domestically produced low-cost natural gas. With 79 percent of voters in Connecticut opposed to the bill, it made no sense for legislators to support it. Moving forward, we remain committed to letting the energy markets work to protect consumers across the state."
The Connecticut Petroleum Council is a division of API, which represents all segments of America's oil and natural gas industry. Its more than 625 members produce, process, and distribute most of the nation's energy. The industry also supports 9.8 million U.S. jobs and is backed by a growing grassroots movement of more than 40 million Americans.
