Even New Media Companies Must Adapt for the Future
HOUSTON, Sept. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- When business partners and family friends Andrew Baker and Brian Bogus began their video production company in 2011, neither expected to work with global brands like Rolls-Royce and Shell Oil on projects having very little to do with actual video production.
"Building a business in the Houston area plugged us into a community of large industrial companies, many of which had never considered using new media and emerging technology to improve their operations and training," said Bogus. "The more video and animation work we produced for our clients, the more we found a need for interactive and software development as well. The expansion into those services was organic based on opportunities presented to us by our clients."
As a technology provider for large industrial companies, Abstract (formerly Abstract Media) focuses on streamlining, digitizing and increasing visualization of operations. They also target better ways to enhance knowledge transfer and retention for training employees and customers of their clients. The Abstract team consists of interactive development, software development, and visualization departments that fulfill custom solutions in the gaming simulation, web/software applications, and 3D space. They work with some of the largest industrial companies in the world on projects ranging from virtual reality and augmented reality training experiences to mobile apps and workflow applications.
"The changes we made as a brand, and the reasoning behind those changes, came completely as a team effort," Baker said. "Our team was talking one day about how we offer so much more than just a typical 'media' company, but we were tied to this name that seemed to hold us back from realizing our true potential."
Around the same time, Bogus noticed an increase in canceled meetings after people would go to their website and see a heavy emphasis on video and animation.
"They thought that's all we could do," he said. "We felt it was time to reflect in our name and our online profile what it is that we really do."
Both Baker and Bogus noted that the design for the new website is agnostic of specific services to speak more to how Abstract caters to solving problems companies face with their training and operations. They also placed a stronger emphasis on their product offering, which couples with their custom interactive and software solutions. While this may still involve elements of video and animation, it won't rely on those options and is not the primary focus of the website and new brand.
"We're technology agnostic in our approach to helping clients, so it makes sense that we take that approach in telling our story," Baker said. "Don't focus on what exactly we created for other clients in the past, only that we solved their issue using a unique combination of new media and technology."
That unique approach to each project is emphasized by their company slogan, Creating Unique.
"We want to get people dreaming about what they want to create right now, and save the logistics of how that happens for talks down the road once we have a direction," Baker said.
Bogus added that while they do handle service work, Abstract also has products currently utilized by clients out in the field as well. When asked if they will now be referred to in conversation simply as Abstract, Bogus said that's really how it's always been.
"Funny enough it's what we get referred to by our clients already," he remarked. "It fit for us to drop the Media from our name since no one uses it in conversation anyway, we're just Abstract."

While the new website will look quite different to returning viewers, the team promised they will provide some elements from the old site for all the videos and animations, so viewers can still access that content.
"We are not changing the mission of our company or what it is that we do for our current clients," Baker and Bogus agreed. "This is simply about telling our story better and accurately representing why it is that these large brands come back to our team over and over again."
