Exelon Utilities a Driving Force Behind States Recognized as Top in the Nation for Electrical Grid Modernization

States and areas served by Exelon utilities had a strong showing in this year’s Grid Modernization Index (GMI), available at www.gridwise.org. Illinois, Maryland and the District of Columbia scored in the top 10 and all states served by Exelon’s utilities – Atlantic City Electric, BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO and Pepco – are in the top 25 in the report.

"Our investments in smarter and more resilient grid systems are producing greater customer value through enhanced reliability, more choice, control and convenience,” said Anne Pramaggiore, senior executive vice president and CEO of Exelon Utilities. "The scores in the states we serve are a result of our efforts to modernize and transform the grid to prepare for a future of climate challenges and connect our customers and communities to clean, affordable energy services they desire.”

Notably, ComEd’s work to modernize its energy grid has brought greater reliability and control over energy usage to its customers, helping to earn Illinois the second spot among all U.S. states in 2018. This is the fourth consecutive year that Illinois was recognized as a top state in grid modernization.

Maryland, which is served by three Exelon utilities, BGE, Delmarva Power, and Pepco, earned the number three spot. Exelon’s utilities have been closely involved in many aspects of the grid modernization for which the state was recognized. These efforts include the state’s strong smart meter deployment, high level of customer engagement through energy efficiency and demand response programs, continued investments in the local energy grid to enhance resiliency and reliability, and ongoing efforts to plan for the future energy grid, including electric vehicles, battery storage and distributed generation.

"We appreciate the work and support of the policy makers and stakeholders in our states who help make these efforts possible with key legislative and regulatory policies,” said Pramaggiore.

The report, produced by the GridWise® Alliance and the Smart Grid Policy Center, evaluates and ranks states based on their progress in modernizing their electric systems with smart grid technologies. The GMI applies a clearly defined set of criteria to evaluate the progress of state grid modernization efforts in three key areas: State Support, Customer Engagement and Grid Operations.
