How Travelers Can Get Their Money Back if Winter Storm Quinn Wipes Out Travel Plans

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., March 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The second major winter storm in less than a week is bringing significant amounts of snow and strong winds to the Northeastern United States. The winter weather has already cancelled thousands of flights, shut down airports, halted public transportation and closed major roadways. Leading travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, breaks down travel insurance coverage for travelers affected by Winter Storm Quinn.

Travel insurance can pay travelers back if Winter Storm Quinn prevents them from reaching their destination. However, to have coverage for this winter storm, travelers must have bought their travel insurance policy before the storm was named on February 28, 2018.

Treacherous Travel Conditions
More than 3,000 flights have already been cancelled and many airlines have waived fees for flight cancellations and rebookings. For those whose airlines are not offering these refunds, travel insurance can pay back the cost of their flight. However, the flight must be delayed at least 12-48 hours, depending on the policy, before cancellation coverage is available.

Stranded at the Airport
As more flights continue to be delayed and cancelled, many travelers will likely be stuck waiting hours at the airport. Travel insurance can pay travelers back for meals, hotel accommodations and local transportation, such as a taxi from the airport to a hotel. The flight must be delayed for at least 3-12 hours, depending on the policy, before this coverage begins.

Dangerous Roads
Many major interstates and roads have been closed after a high number of car accidents and vehicle pileups. Some travel insurance providers will pay travelers back for the cost of their flights and additional trip costs if they're involved in an accident on the way to the airport. A limited number of travel insurance providers will also cover travelers who were not directly involved in an accident but were stuck in traffic and missed their flight due to an accident. A police report that documents the accident will be needed when making the claim.

Squaremouth's Winter Storm Quinn and Travel Insurance Information Center explains travel insurance coverage with up-to-date information for travelers affected by the storm, including answers to FAQs and statements from providers.
