IKEA To Offer 'Jazz Night and Dreamers' at Store Tonight as One of CIGNA, Philadelphia Dream Events in Support of MLK Memorial

A Celebration of Jazz Night and Dreamers will be held tonight at IKEA®, a CIGNA customer, as the latest in a series of community Dream Events coordinated by CIGNA Foundation and Philadelphia to keep the dream alive for the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C. The program will be presented at no charge by the Point Breeze Performing Arts Center, whose mission is to bring about social change through the arts, from 6 to 8 p.m. at IKEA South Philadelphia, 2206 S. Columbus Blvd. This will be the grand finale of IKEA’s jazz nights, which have existed since May 2005 as part of IKEA’s commitment to the community. In looking for new ways to demonstrate social responsibility, IKEA South Philadelphia and Wireless Philadelphia are exploring the possibility of offering customers free wi-fi internet service in the IKEA store. CIGNA, Philadelphia Community Dream Events The Philadelphia community Dream Events are a spin-off of the gala Philadelphia Dream Dinner that will be held later this month, a celebration offered by the Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation to communities that have provided outstanding leadership in the drive to complete the historic monument. CIGNA earlier this year became the first local company to contribute one million dollars to the National Memorial, making Philadelphia one of a few cities nationwide eligible to host a Dream Dinner. "The Dream Events are a way to strengthen our collective sense of civic pride by offering an opportunity for the entire city to play a meaningful part in the building of this lasting tribute to the spirit of Dr. King and to demonstrate Philadelphia’s sense of ‘Brotherly Love,’” said Gianna Jackson, executive director of the CIGNA Foundation. Because not everyone can attend the Philadelphia Dream Dinner, CIGNA is providing the city’s neighborhoods with a chance to get involved with the National Memorial, encouraging organizations, citizens and corporations to sponsor and coordinate Dream Events. Activities can range from luncheons and pancake breakfasts to dance performances and car washes, all with the goal of increasing awareness and support for the National Memorial. Earlier this month, CIGNA teamed up on a Dream Event with Wireless Philadelphia at an UrbanPhilly.com networking and social night at HARU Restaurant, and with Mid-County Senior Services for a fall garden party at the Main Line Adult Day center in Bryn Mawr. Big Names, Young Dreamers at November 14 Philadelphia Dream Dinner When Philadelphia’s Dream Dinner takes place November 14 at the National Constitution Center, celebrities will include CNN’s Soledad O’Brien as mistress of ceremonies and Grammy Award- winning artist Stephanie Mills. Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell will serve as the Chairman of the Honorary Host Committee and CIGNA Corporation Chairman and CEO H. Edward Hanway will serve as the Dinner Chairman. A host of other entertainment, business and political luminaries will attend. A special designation of Philadelphia Young Dreamer also was created to select and invite 10 young people to the Dream Dinner who exemplify Dr. King’s service to the community. "Recognizing that Dr. King’s dream was about ‘the content of our character,’ other guests will include our Philadelphia Young Dreamers. These Dreamers are young people from across Philadelphia who – facing overwhelming odds but inspired by the legacy of Dr. King and others like him – are making a difference in our community,” Jackson said. Some of the Young Dreamers will share their accomplishments through short video presentations that will be shown during the Dream Dinner. All Young Dreamers will be seated with leaders and will have an opportunity to tell their stories on a personal level. More information on the 10 Philadelphia Young Dreamers will be available soon. Keeping the Dream Alive A site dedicated to Philadelphia on the www.mlkmemorial.org/philadelphia website will track all donations from the local Dream Events and members of the Philadelphia community. A wrap-up of the city’s Dream Event fundraising will be announced at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert sponsored by CIGNA on January 21, 2008.
