Partying Sober -- Breaking the Alcohol Traditions of the Big Game
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. and HOUSTON, Jan. 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Big Game is known as one of the heaviest drinking days of the year. For those in recovery, who've committed to a life of sobriety, it can be a challenging time. It is the reason American Addiction Centers (AAC), the nation's first publicly traded company solely dedicated to addiction, is supporting a sober movement this year.
"I think it's almost a stigma in this country that in order to have a good time, you have to be under the influence and that is just not true," said Nicole Vasquez, National Alumni Manager, American Addiction Centers. "That is why our alumni team exists because it is so important, particularly for young people who get sober, to know you don't need substances to have fun in recovery. We put on events nationwide and meetings to get them acclimated to this lifestyle."
AAC's sober movement includes sponsoring the first ever SoberBowl SuperFest™ in Houston on February 5, and launching a social media Party Punch Contest and Photo challenge.
The public has until January 30 to submit their favorite non-alcoholic Party Punch Recipes, along with the unique name for their drink, to socialmedia@contactaac.com. The top recipes, chosen by American Addiction Centers staff, will be featured in a cooking video on AAC's YouTube Channel and promoted on the company's Facebook and Twitter pages, reaching more than 34,000 followers.
American Addiction Centers is also encouraging people to throw their own sober parties and share those photos on social media with the hashtag #SipSober.
"Sometimes it's not always comfortable to be around alcohol, so it's nice to have an environment you can go to and not even worry about it being there," said Vasquez. "That's why we are also excited to sponsor the SoberBowl SuperFest. We are encouraging our alumni to attend. We will also have our treatment consultants there as well."
The SoberBowl SuperFest (SBSF), #SoberBowlHTX, is a day packed full of festivities, including yoga on the lawn, a concert, and a game-watching party. The event is getting national attention and several former NFL players are also putting their support behind it, further highlighting the importance of AAC's sober movement this game day.
"What SBSF is doing is giving everyone the opportunity to have a safe and sober alternative to the status quo of what a Super Bowl party is," said Ryan Leaf, San Diego Chargers. "AA and my recovery program saved my life and this is our way of infusing that life into a long-standing stigma for some positive change!"
"Getting sober is my greatest accomplishment," said Randy Grimes, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "It was also the hardest to achieve, but through God and AA, I have learned how to be a man again...one day at a time! Thank you SBSF for creating a safe and sober game-day environment!"
