Reset Summer Camp for Technology Addiction Opens Application Portal, Appoints Top Parenting Expert
ORANGE, Calif., Mar. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Reset Summer Camp, one of the only summer camp programs specifically designed for adolescents struggling with gaming and screen addiction, today announced the opening of their application portal for summer 2019. In addition, the camp has appointed top parenting expert and frequent contributor to The Today Show, Dr. Deborah Gilboa – popularly known as Dr. G – to oversee family engagement.
"We're excited to start our summer camp season with the opening of the application portal and thrilled that someone of Dr. G's stature and expertise has joined our team," said Executive Director Michael Jacobus.
Reset Summer Camp will operate out of four locations this summer: Santa Barbara, CA, College Station, TX, Asheville, NC, and Huntington, IN. Each site is intentionally located on a college campus to give campers a multitude of supervised social and recreational opportunities while learning important self-care and life skills.
The application process is an easy three-step screening questionnaire and clinical review done to ensure that each child's specific needs can be addressed within the 4-week therapeutic program.
"Our goal is to create meaningful, technology-free experiences for the teen who arrives at our camp glued to his or her smart phone, or the one who spends endless amounts of time playing Fortnite," said Jacobus. "We provide them with a digital 'detox' and help them learn that there is much more to life. We also offer family education and therapeutic aftercare to foster continued success."
Jacobus emphasizes that total abstinence from technology is not the goal.
"We realize that today's world requires most people to be connected digitally, and that many schools require that students be online for assignments. Our purpose is not to cut out technology forever but to create healthy habits that teens and their families can apply at home."
An important part of the curriculum requires family participation so that everyone understands the digital adjustments that will need to be made at home to best support the child. Dr. G will lead this family engagement component and is a passionate believer in shifting parental roles so that kids can step up and take responsibility for their actions.
"As a parent of four boys, I want to inspire other parents with relatable stories and actionable tools to help them guide their child through the development of crucial life skills," said Dr. G. "I am passionate about raising kids with character in this ever-changing world, and excited to support the families at Reset Summer Camps."
Dr. G is a board certified family physician, media personality, author, speaker and social influencer. She has received multiple awards for clinical excellence in teaching, and is a graduate of University of Pittsburgh's SOM and Carnegie Mellon University, as well as an alumnus of Chicago's Second City Improv Theater. This diverse background and experience adds to her credibility and lively story-telling, and has led to appearances on all of the major television networks including NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox News, as well as in Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal and Yahoo! Parenting.
Reset Summer Camp offers a fully immersive, residential four-week, clinical program hosted on a college campus, with a fun-filled, summer camp atmosphere. Teens "detox" from their screen addictions and learn how to self-regulate while participating in individual and group therapy. The life skills focused program creates understanding and builds self-confidence so that campers will be able to handle real-world responsibilities. Staff include experienced youth-development professionals, clinical interns, registered nurses and private-practice mental health PhDs who work daily with teens suffering from problematic use of technology, gaming addiction and other unhealthy screen-time habits.
