SeeBeyond Solution Accelerates Healthcare Processes in Effort
to Enable Single View of Patients

SeeBeyond (Nasdaq:SBYN), provider of the world's first fully integrated composite application network (SeeBeyond ICAN) for advanced integration and composite application solutions, announced today that the Rhineland Regional Authority, "Landschaftsverband Rheinland" (LVR), has successfully deployed the SeeBeyond platform. Responsible for ten hospitals and five remedial pedagogical homes, LVR selected the SeeBeyond solution to enable the seamless integration of its distributed IT systems, and to accelerate business processes across the organization.
The LVR is a union of the Rhineland towns and districts, a region with a total population of roughly 9.5 million. The authority carries out responsibilities which are undertaken at the regional level including social, education and health tasks. In healthcare, the LVR oversees nine specialist psychiatric clinics with a total of 5,680 beds, an orthopaedic hospital with 170 beds, and five remedial pedagogical homes. With its multiple locations, LVR was faced with managing a disparate IT infrastructure, and identified the need to deploy a centralized solution that allowed a common view of data across the organization.
"Our immediate goal was to connect a total of 50 systems -- all of which needed to be supported by a centralized, agile infrastructure," said Markus Bauer, Product Manager at LVR InfoKom. "Each of LVR's ten hospitals has its own set of independent information systems. LVR chose the SeeBeyond platform to connect and optimize the flow of information across these systems because it offered the required flexibility and was also the most cost-effective solution."
With SeeBeyond, LVR now has an intermediary platform which allows data to be centrally managed and accelerated between the hospital information systems, the laboratory and documentation systems, and SAP which controls the administration and management of patient data. One benefit that LVR has seen since the SeeBeyond deployment is that laboratory results are now available to the entire organization one minute after they have been generated by an individual hospital.
The foundation of the solution is the SeeBeyond eGate(TM) Integrator platform, which leverages Alert Agent and BAPI, SAP and HCM (Hospital Communication Module) modules. The computer center of the LVR system, run by the IT-provider InfoKom consists of 350 servers and the eGate platform functions here as a bi-directional interface between the database servers and the application servers on which the image data is stored.
The initial rollout of SeeBeyond was completed in a single day in the Fall of 2003. Achim Klesen, Technology Product Manager at LVR InfoKom and responsible for the hospitals confirms that the implementation was problem-free, and adds, "Since the changeover, the communication platform has proven its performance and runs smoothly. Every day an average of 4,000 files, representing a volume of 10 MB, are exchanged via the platform -- and the figure is rising because the integration solution is constantly extended."
Today, the LVR has 15 systems connected to its central platform. "Decoupling the systems has gone very smoothly. A major benefit is the time savings we have gained through the SeeBeyond platform. We would never have managed it with hard work (manpower) alone," concludes both Bauer and Klesen. "And the real benefits are yet to come."
Future plans for the LVR includes establishing connectivity between SAP and the hospital systems via the integration platform.
"The automatic flow of patient data is a fundamental need for patient care facilities today," said Ian Hill, Senior Vice President and General Manager of EMEA for SeeBeyond. "With a 15 year track record in healthcare, SeeBeyond is taking a lead role in enabling a single view of the patient for organizations like the LVR, and is not only enabling this capability for clinics and hospital systems, but entire countries."
