Sale, Maintenance and Repair of Motor Cycles and Parts in South Africa 2016

LONDON, Dec. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Sale, Maintenance and Repair of Motor Cycles in South Africa : Currently there is no local manufacture of motorcycles so all units, parts and most accessories are imported. According to the Association of Motorcycle Importers and Distributors (AMID), the 2015 revenue of its members was approximately R1.762bn. In 2015 there were 23,304 motorcycles registered for road use in South Africa.

Composition of the Sector: Motorcycle importers can be subsidiaries of the overseas parent companies such as BMW, Honda and Suzuki, or independent importers such as KMSA Distributors and Yamaha. While some of these companies serve only as corporate offices which distribute to dealers countrywide, others also sell directly to the public. Some companies prefer a broad reach into the market and sell models in each segment, while others prefer to focus on one or two specific segments. Only a few of the motorcycle distributors are linked to car manufacturers. Most of the distributors in this sector rely on very small staff complements and do not have the advertising and marketing budgets generally associated with their automotive counterparts. Tough Conditions: The industry is experiencing the worst decline in sales mainly as a result of the weaker Rand, the constrained economy and the change in homologation regulations. Total new motorcycle registrations decreased by 15% to 23,304 units in 2015 from 27,358 units in 2014 following an approximately 20% year-on-year (y/y) decline in new motorcycle registrations in 2014. Stakeholders believe that sales during 2016 and 2017 are unlikely to increase.Report Coverage:

The report on the motorcycle sector details the current state of the sector, recent corporate activity and factors influencing the success of the industry, including the newly introduced homologation regulations. The report profiles 18 companies, including Honda, which has the most comprehensive range of motorcycles in the local market, and the largest market share at 17.5%. Also profiled are BMW with 12% of the market and Scooter distributor Big Boy, which was taken over by Southern African Motorcycles Pty Ltd (SAM).
