Teamsters Union Stands With Nissan Workers In Mississippi

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Teamsters Union stands in solidarity with over 3,700 Nissan workers in Mississippi who are voting in their election to join the United Auto Workers today and Friday.

The workers are organizing in Canton, one of only three nonunion Nissan plants worldwide.

"On behalf of the 1.4 million members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, we support the brave Canton workers who have persisted in their efforts to form a union despite fierce opposition from their employer," said Jim Hoffa, Teamsters General President. "We applaud these courageous workers as they stand up for what's right and to improve their working conditions."

The National Labor Relations Board recently charged that the company violated workers' rights. Workers say the company has threatened to close the plant if they join the union, interrogated workers about their union support and promised better conditions if employees oppose the union.

Nissan workers are organizing to ensure their civil rights, improve safety and treatment on the job and to gain the protections of a union contract, among other concerns.

"These workers give their all to the company, and they deserve decent, humane treatment. We support them wholeheartedly as they unite for fairness," Hoffa said.
