USW Calls Senate Democratic Infrastructure Plan a Bold Approach to Rebuild America's Crumbling Infrastructure
PITTSBURGH, Jan. 24, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers (USW) released the following statement on today's announcement by Senate Democrats of their Blueprint to Rebuild America's Infrastructure. The plan is estimated to create over 15 million new jobs.
"The Democratic plan is a necessary and bold approach to rebuild America's crumbling infrastructure. The $1 trillion initiative would repair our existing infrastructure and make significant new investments for the future. Coupled with strong domestic procurement requirements, the plan is estimated to create over 15 million new jobs.
"This approach directs real money to solve real problems. It ensures that critically-needed but less profitable projects like fixing the lead pipes in Flint and other communities are addressed -- not just new toll roads.
"Infrastructure may be one of the issues where Congress and the new Administration can work together to do the people's business. Democrats are on board and the new President has made clear that infrastructure funding and strong domestic content provisions are a high priority.
"Democrats are coming to the table with a comprehensive, forward-looking proposal that can serve as the basis for making America's infrastructure the envy of the world. The public is hoping that the logjam in Congress can be broken in order to create the 21st century infrastructure that is so sorely needed."
The USW represents 850,000 workers in North America employed in many industries, including metals, rubber, chemicals, paper, oil refining, mining and the service and public sectors. For more information: http://www.usw.org/.
