ARGENTINA: Government Wants To Create New Statistics Institute

(RTTNews) - The Argentinean government intends to dissolve the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) to create the National Council of Statistical Information, from which should be established the new National Statistics Institute (INE). The proposal also contemplates changes to the country's statistical system.

According to reports of local media outlets, the bill establishes that the National Council of Statistical Information should be a decentralized organism within the scope of the National Executive Power, with its legal personality, functional independence, and financial autonomy.

Among the changes, there is also the choice by the contest of a director and a technical director, who should be in office for five years with the option of a single renewal. With the measure, the government intends to professionalize the new body.
