Mosquitoes are an annoyance but also present a danger to Nassau and Suffolk residents. Mosquito populations are on the rise and the potentially serious diseases they spread give cause to take precautions to ensure that mosquito populations are minimized. Alternative EarthCare shares a spring checklist for minimizing mosquitoes in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
- Install a bat house Thankfully mosquitoes are very active when bats are, and bats can eat up to 1,200 insects per hour. Keeping at least one bat house on the property helps to keep mosquito populations in check.
- Remove all standing water and debris that can collect water Standing water is a breeding ground for disease-spreading mosquitoes. Be sure to shake water from tarps, refresh birdbath water regularly, and remove any areas of standing water such as in kiddie pools, tires, buckets, and garden urns
- Plant natural repellants Citronella grass, Catnip and members of the mint family, lavender, basil, marigolds, lemon balm, and more, naturally repel mosquitoes. Plant natural repellents around property borders, near the house, and anywhere that people tend to congregate on the property.
- Punch holes in the bottom of garbage and recycling cans People tend to remove standing water throughout their property but then forget about bins that are in constant use, such as garbage and recycling bins. Even with lids, water can collect in the bottoms of these containers and become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Drill small holes in the bottoms of garbage and recycling containers so that water drains out.
- Keep gutters clean Gutters get clogged with leaf debris which also causes standing water pockets. Ensure that gutters are cleaned as needed to prevent potential mosquito breeding areas.
- Obtain professional spray treatments While all the do-it-yourself steps to minimize tick populations are always important; it is especially important to obtain professional mosquito spraying treatments to drive mosquito populations down and keep them down. To best protect people and pets, ensure that professional mosquito spraying begins in the spring and occurs every three-four weeks throughout the active season.
