American IRA Discusses Diversifying into Alternative Asset Classes with a Self-Directed IRA
ASHEVILLE, N.C., May 4, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- What does it mean to stay diversified within a retirement portfolio? For some investors, the answer might be in owning a broad range of stocks or holding a well-diversified fund, but with a Self-Directed IRA, investors have access to even more asset classes beyond the stock market, including real estate, private equity, gold and precious metals, partnerships and even LLCs.
According to a recent post at American IRA, this strategy means that investors who want a higher level of diversification within their portfolio might broaden their range out of the stock market. Also, because the tax implications of holding these assets within a retirement account are favorable to investors both old and young, using a Self-Directed IRA can be a powerful way to hold a diversified portfolio of retirement assets for a wide range of investors.
"With this post, we wanted to introduce a simple idea," said Jim Hitt, CEO of American IRA. "Diversification. It's a word that a lot of people throw around, yet few people really stop to think about. What does it mean to be diversified within a retirement portfolio? At American IRA, we think it means that you own more than stocks. Maybe you own a wide variety of other assets that help you feel stronger about contributing to retirement because you are not worried about the price of an individual stock fund."
With a Self-Directed IRA, investors can choose their own investments, but the caveat is that with more control comes more responsibility for directing an investor's own portfolio. As American IRA and other Self-Directed IRA administration firms do not offer specific investment advice, the investor is left to manage much of their own portfolio or, if they choose, all of it.
"There is more out there for investors than just the stock market," said Jim Hitt. "The stock market is a powerful tool for wealth-building but holding 100% of one's assets in the market means they are beholden to the twists and turns of any given year. There are other ways to realize advantages in retirement accounts without putting 100% of your money into stocks and stock funds."
