Andrew Lee Named to Young Global Leaders Class of 2011 by World Economic Forum

Aetna (NYSE: AET) today announced that Andrew Lee, vice president, new businesses, has been honored as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, which each year recognizes distinguished leaders under the age of 40 from around the world. Lee was among 190 individuals selected from more than 65 countries. He is the first American Indian to receive this honor.

In total, there are 668 Young Global Leaders from more than 100 countries, representing business, social entrepreneurship, media, politics, nonprofits, society and arts and culture. They participate in various events and initiatives designed to address global challenges, such as disease prevention, educational improvement, climate change and poverty eradication.

Lee, 38, joined Aetna in 2005 and headed the Office of Public Policy from 2007 to 2009. He served as chief of staff to Aetna’s Office of the President from 2009 until early this year when he was appointed to his current position. In his new role, Lee is responsible for helping to develop the company’s Accountable Care Solutions business, which works with hospitals and health systems across the country to improve the quality and affordability of health care.

"We are proud to have Andrew recognized among the next generation of global leaders,” said Mark T. Bertolini, CEO and president. "Aetna is committed to expanding its global presence and this distinction reinforces the importance of our commitment to having a talented, diverse workforce in place to compete in the global marketplace. In his six years with Aetna, Andrew has made valuable contributions to the organization.”

"I am honored to be recognized as a Young Global Leader,” Lee said. "With this honor comes a personal responsibility to leverage this important platform and diverse network to make meaningful progress in addressing major challenges facing the global community. I am excited to share my experiences and perspectives and, more importantly, to work with the other honorees to transform ideas into action.”

Lee, who is half-Seneca and whose extended family resides on the Seneca Nation of Indians’ Cattaraugus Indian Reservation in western New York, is recognized widely for his leadership in American Indian affairs. He is co-author of a comprehensive book on the social and economic conditions among tribes and he serves on a number of national boards and advisory councils for institutions such as the Smithsonian, Harvard University and the National Congress of American Indians. Lee received his undergraduate degree from Hamilton College and a master in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, where he was a Woodrow Wilson fellow in public policy and international affairs.
