City of West Hollywood Mayor Stands with Mayors from Across the Nation in a National Day of Action in Support of the Affordable Care Act

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Feb. 22, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The City of West Hollywood is taking action to respond to policy proposals from the Trump Administration that could negatively impact West Hollywood's LGBT residents, people with disabilities, seniors, people of color, immigrants, women, and others.

Today, Wednesday, February 22, 2017, City of West Hollywood Mayor Lauren Meister is joining with West Hollywood City Councilmembers and more than 250 mayors from across the nation to defend access to healthcare and to reiterate the urgency of resisting efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The Mayors' National Day of Action in Support of the ACA aims to raise community awareness and advocate for support from legislators in Washington DC to protect healthcare coverage. As part of the effort, mayors and city leaders from across the country are posting to social media with the hashtag #MayorsStand4All.

"We've recently seen Congress take steps to roll back healthcare through its budget reconciliation process and one of the first executive actions taken by the new President during his first days in office served to codify his intent to dismantle the Affordable Care Act," said West Hollywood Mayor Lauren Meister. "More than 20 million Americans have obtained heath care coverage since the ACA was implemented and, as Mayor of the City of West Hollywood, I am committed to taking a stand on healthcare. We can't and we won't stand idly by as efforts are made to take coverage away from our neighbors and communities. We should all stand up, raise our voices, and demand that our leaders treat access to healthcare as a right, not a privilege."

The City of West Hollywood is committed to defending access to healthcare for everyone. The City has routinely held "pop-up" events to educate community members about Covered California, California's official healthcare marketplace where individuals, families, and small businesses can find low cost health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. The City, through its Social Services Division, funds critical programs to support health and wellness services. The City was the first city in the nation to declare itself pro-choice and it has continually supported state and federal legislation protecting and advancing women's reproductive rights and access to healthcare. The City's response to the AIDS crisis has been recognized as a model for other cities, nationally and globally.
