Dietitian "Leans on Lamb" for Healthy Entertaining with Unforgettable Flavor

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Entertaining at home has become the thing to do—from supper clubs to al fresco barbeques, Americans love to gather around the table with friends and family to enjoy favorite foods and share new recipes.  And home entertaining presents a great opportunity to nourish guests with foods that are both delicious and good-for-you, such as lean lamb.

Data from the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and Prevention magazine's 2013 Shopping For Health survey tells us that consumers want to eat healthy.  In fact, 81 percent of grocery shoppers report putting at least "some" or "a lot" of effort into healthy eating.  And approximately one-third of shoppers said they are inspired to eat healthy by friends and family.

According to Rebecca Scritchfield, registered dietitian, lean lamb is a secret ingredient in her kitchen, ensuring that dinner parties are both flavorful and nutritious. "I love entertaining friends and family by having them over to my home for a meal.  My guests expect that what I serve will be healthy. I enjoy surprising them with a decadent-tasting meal featuring lean lamb, which provides an abundance of flavor and nutrients."

With close to 40 percent of Americans having never tried lamb, serving it at dinner parties creates occasions to remember and introduces guests to a healthy, versatile protein that adds variety to the diet.  And lamb is definitely on-trend, with restaurants and food trucks embracing this succulent, easy-to-cook meat to make everything from exotic tagines to spicy lamb burgers.

"Lamb is always a welcomed delight when I entertain at home – the juiciness and tenderness of the meat is such a crowd pleaser, and lamb is just as simple to prepare as other meats but adds more flavor," said Rebecca. "It really has the perfect package of flavor, nutrition, and versatility. Lamb is a red meat I feel good about."

Why Lamb?

  • Lean. On average, a 3 oz. serving of lamb is lean and has only 175 calories. Lean cuts include the leg, loin, and rack.
  • Omega-3's. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an essential omega-3 fatty acid found in lamb.  A 3-oz. serving of lamb delivers approximately 100mg of the essential omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).  This is 6.25 percent of the highest Adequate Intake for ALA.
  • Nutrient Rich. Lamb is nutrient rich, and on average, it's an excellent source of protein, vitamin B12, niacin, zinc, and selenium and a good source of iron and riboflavin.
  • Simple & Versatile. Lamb is easy to cook—from grilling to roasting, braising to broiling, stir frying to slow cooking, lamb can accommodate many cooking techniques and flavor profiles. With a variety of cuts to choose from, there are lots of options with lamb, and it can fit within any budget.
