Federal Fire Department in Pearl Harbor Uses ZOLL AutoPulse to Save 37-Year-Old Seaman from Sudden Cardiac Arrest

ZOLL Medical Corporation (Nasdaq GS: ZOLL), a manufacturer of medical devices and related software solutions, announced today that the Federal Fire Department Hawaii (FFD), based in Pearl Harbor, used training and a ZOLL AutoPulse^® Non-invasive Cardiac Support Pump to help save the life of a 37-year-old active Navy service member. The serviceman collapsed during an early morning physical training run on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay on Oahu. Only days before the event, the medic unit had undergone additional in-service training on the automated chest compression device.

According to Dennis Yurong, Region EMS Chief for FFD Navy Region Hawaii, a car driving by noticed the man collapsed on the pavement and called 911. Personnel from Engine 112 and Medic 8 responded. They began CPR and followed ALS protocol, including defibrillating the pulseless and unresponsive male. The lead medic applied the AutoPulse following his recent training.

Once the AutoPulse started delivering automated chest compressions, the patient was loaded into the ambulance where he regained a pulse, resumed good blood pressure, and started breathing on his own en route to the hospital.

"The response team’s preparedness from their recent training resulted in saving a life,” said Yurong. "Our EMS ambulances, equipment, and training give our first responders an effective method of performing chest compressions, which in turn increases a victim’s chance of survival.”

One of the paramedics commented, "I would use it on a family member, " said Jason Hanagani, a paramedic firefighter.

"The importance of being able to provide continuous, high-quality chest compressions during emergency situations, while also freeing up first responders to attend to the critical needs of patients, is paramount when every second counts,” Yurong said.
