Google Names VMware Co-founder Diane Greene As Cloud Chief
(RTTNews) - Google Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. (GOOG, GOOGL), is consolidating its various cloud businesses into a single group to be led by Diane Greene, a co-founder and former chief executive officer of software maker VMware Inc.
The reorganization brings Google for Work, Cloud Platform, and Google Apps into one organization, led by Greene, who has served on the company's board for three years.
"only a tiny fraction of the world's data is currently in the cloud - most businesses and applications aren't cloud-based yet. This is an important and fast-growing area for Google and we're investing for the future," Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai said.
In addition, Google Inc. announced that it entered into an agreement to acquire bebop Technologies, Inc, a company founded by Greene that develops an enterprise application platform. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in 2015.
Immediately following the close of the bebop transaction, Diane will become a Senior Vice President of Google and will resign from Google's Audit Committee.
Google expect that its board will appoint John Doerr to replace Diane on its Audit Committee. Immediately upon his appointment to the Audit Committee, John intends to resign from its Leadership Development and Compensation Committee. Diane will continue to serve on its board as a non-independent director.
