Smiths Detection’s Handheld Radiation Detector RadSeeker Chosen for Anti-Terrorism Efforts
Following the product launch of RadSeeker in May 2011, Smiths Detection today announces a $4.5 million award from the U.S. Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO), for RadSeeker DL systems.
The RadSeeker, a next generation handheld radiation detector and identifier developed under DNDO contract in collaboration with DNDO and other Department of Homeland Security (DHS) components, has enhanced capability to distinguish radiological and nuclear threats from background "false positives” produced by naturally occurring radiation or other legitimate everyday radiological materials.
Its advanced performance, small size, durability and communications capabilities including direct reach back over satellite phone, are ideal for an array of applications. These include supporting civil defense and first responder search operations and helping port and border personnel evaluate cargo, containers and vehicles for Special Nuclear Material or "dirty bomb” threats.
Cherif Rizkalla, Chief Commercial Officer of Smiths Detection, said: "The RadSeeker program is a great example of the private and public sector working closely together to develop a next-generation capability to be used in the frontlines of the U.S. Government’s anti-terrorism efforts. We are proud to have created a product, such as RadSeeker, with the advanced capabilities needed to detect and interdict threats to our borders and facilities.”
Manufactured in Smiths Detection’s facility in Danbury, Conn., the RadSeeker DL has passed extensive testing by DHS components and other government agencies in laboratories and in the field during operational testing at multiple locations throughout the U.S.
