TSX Ends Week With A Whimper -- Canadian Commentary
(RTTNews) - Canadian stocks were slightly lower Friday, as the rally in energy stocks petered out and crude oil slipped below $50 a barrel.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index was down 29.24 points, or 0.20 percent, to 14,566.26.
Energy stocks were down 0.6 percent. Nov. WTI oil was down 63 cents, or 1.3%, for the day to settle at $49.81/bbl.
Still, prices were up 3.3% for the week, having touched the highest since June.
Thomson Reuters (TRI.TO) will build new tech hub, adding 400 jobs in Toronto.
Agrium Inc. (AGU.TO, AGU) and Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (POT.TO, POT) shareholders will hold separate meetings next month to vote on a merger agreement.
Agrium shareholders will meet in Calgary, Alberta on Nov. 3, while Potash investors meet the same day in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Canexus (CUS.TO) appointed David Collyer as board chair, and will have a special committee evaluate and respond to Chemtrade's hostile takeover bid.
Murray Edwards is raising his stake in Canexus.
Ivanhoe (IVN.TO) shares were up 9 percent.
