ECUADOR: President Leaves Summit After FARC Dissenters Kidnap Journalists

(RTTNews) - The president of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, decided to suspend his presence at the Summit of the Americas in Peru and return to his country following the kidnapping of several journalists by dissidents of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) former guerrilla group.

Recently, Colombian media outlets announced that they had received photographs that would confirm the death of three Ecuadorian journalists kidnapped two weeks ago by FARC dissidents on the Ecuadorian side's border.

"I have decided to return immediately to Ecuador because of the critical situation we are experiencing right now, and I am returning with relatives of Javier, Pail, and Efrain," the president wrote on his Twitter account, referring to the kidnapped press workers.

Earlier, the Colombian television channel RCN reported today having received photographs showing corpses allegedly of the kidnapped journalists. Shortly after, the Minister of the Interior of Ecuador, Cesar Navas, said that there is not yet conclusive evidence of the claim.
