Active Power Receives $6 Million in PowerHouse Orders

According to BroadGroup Consulting, datacenter containerization is becoming more mainstream and generally accepted in the industry due to its space savings, rapid deployment and lower capital costs. Critical backup power systems manufacturer Active Power (NASDAQ: ACPW) continues to benefit from this positive trend as it generates traction with its PowerHouse solution, a containerized power and cooling infrastructure optimized for the needs of this datacenter application.

After announcing $5 million in PowerHouse orders last August, Active Power has since received nearly $6 million in orders that represent more than 4.5 megawatts of mission critical backup power. Three of the orders have already shipped with the remaining scheduled to ship later this year.

All but one of the orders was sold directly to the customer with orders deriving from countries around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom and France. Customers represent a variety of industries including defense, telecommunications, petrochemical, education and information technology. Half of the new PowerHouse orders will provide power and cooling architecture for containerized datacenter deployments with two being deployed in conjunction with Active Power’s strategic IT partners.

"We are encouraged by the sales momentum we are realizing for PowerHouse, which demonstrates the potential for this product in the marketplace,” said Jim Clishem, president and CEO, Active Power. "Our strong relationships with our strategic IT partners place Active Power in a unique position to benefit from this positive market acceptance of containerized datacenter technology.”

"However, it is important to note this solution can and has been used in a variety of other applications including traditional facility infrastructure expansion, disaster recovery, temporary critical power needs and event support,” added Clishem.

PowerHouse integrates Active Power’s flywheel-based CleanSource® UPS (uninterruptible power supply), switchgear, generator and monitoring software. The flywheel UPS technology lends itself well to containerized applications due to its high power density, small footprint and rugged design, providing a competitive barrier-to-entry for battery-based UPS systems.
