Alstom to Support Darlington Nuclear Power Plant Refurbishment in Ontario
Regulatory News :
Alstom (Paris:ALO) has been selected to refurbish four steam turbine generator units, with an approximate power capacity of 900 MW each, for Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) 3,512 MW Darlington power plant (Darlington). This long-term service contract is worth approximately €265 million1. Alstom will refurbish four steam turbines and generators units, and the associated auxiliary equipment. The first planned outage to start this modernisation is scheduled for the fall of 2016 and completion of the entire refurbishment project is expected in late 2024.
As the original equipment manufacturer, Alstom has provided on-going service and technical support to OPG for the equipment since its commissioning in the early 1990s. This refurbishment project supports OPG’s efforts to maximise Darlington’s value by extending its operating life until approximately 2055. With this modernisation, Ontario will continue to benefit from over 3,500 MW of clean, cost-efficient base load electricity.
"We have been supporting OPG at Darlington since it was built and know the equipment and project requirements very well,” said Hans-Peter Meer, Senior Vice President of Alstom Thermal Service. "The order secured demonstrates OPG’s continued confidence in Alstom’s ability to service power generation facilities and the recognition of Alstom’s more than 50 years of global experience in servicing nuclear power plants.”
Alstom’s Thermal Service business offices in Ottawa and Burlington, Ontario will manage the project. Alstom’s manufacturing facilities located in Europe and the USA will supply the equipment.
Located in the municipality of Clarington, approximately 70 km east of the city of Toronto, the Darlington power plant was originally commissioned between 1990 and 1993. It supplies approximately 20% of Ontario’s electricity needs. This mid-life refurbishment will be one of the largest capital infrastructure projects in Canada, creating significant long-term benefits for 25 to 30 additional years beyond the existing life cycle, including employment, business and supplier opportunities as well as increased municipal revenue. OPG has also announced plans to install two additional nuclear units at Darlington in the near future.
