Congress members, labor leaders to discuss furloughs, budget cuts
Reps. S. Davis and S. Peters will hold a press conference Thursday, August 22, 2013at the San Diego Federal Building
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- U.S. Reps. Susan Davis and Scott Peters will join with local labor leaders at a press conference this Thursday to discuss the future of sequestration and federal budget cuts.
The press conference, which is being coordinated by the American Federation of Government Employees, is intended to raise public awareness of how sequestration and budget cuts continue to jeopardize the federal government's ability to perform its mission.
"Unless Congress ends sequestration now and passes realistic budgets for all our federal agencies, these extreme budget cuts are going to continue for another nine years," said George E. McCubbin III, National Vice President of AFGE for District 12, which includes California. "These budget cuts will decimate the government's ability to protect and serve its citizens at home and abroad, threaten the country's fragile economic recovery, and harm the lives of millions of hardworking men and women in both the public and private sectors."
AFGE is the largest federal employee union, representing more than 670,000 federal and D.C. government workers nationwide. AFGE represents more than 5,200 employees in the two congressional districts represented by Davis and Peters, including at the Department of Defense, Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Social Security Administration, Veterans Administration and Transportation Security Administration.
