On June 23, 2017, with friends in Tacoma's "Firecracker Alley," the teen found a discarded unexploded shell, lit the fuse and suffered severe injuries, including the loss of four fingers on his left hand. He received emergency care at UW Medicine/Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
