Dow’s Excellence in Energy Efficiency Continues to Gain Important Recognition

The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), a leader in energy conservation, has been recognized for its excellence in energy efficiency by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The DOE awarded two Superior Energy Performance certifications to the Company for achievements in energy efficiency at its Texas City Operations facility.

The Superior Energy Performance program is a new American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited energy management certification program designed to help industrial facilities drive continual energy efficiency achievements while maintaining competitiveness. The project was developed by the DOE with support from the U.S. Council for Energy-Efficient Manufacturing (U.S. CEEM).

"Dow has long been recognized for our leadership in industrial energy conservation and we are extremely proud of our results in this area,” said George Biltz, vice president of Energy and Climate Change at Dow. "We applaud Texas City Operations as an excellent example of how Dow continues to be at the forefront in driving improvements in energy efficiency through our actions, innovations and industry leadership.”

From 1994 to 2010, Dow has saved 1,800 trillion Btu, which is the energy equivalent to powering all residential buildings throughout California for more than one and a half years. The Company’s energy efficiency efforts have prevented more than 95 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, from entering the atmosphere and have contributed cost savings of $9.4 billion. The Company has also committed $100 million to fund additional acceleration in energy efficiency projects at its sites around the world.

Larry Schmid, Texas City Operations site leader at Dow noted the company’s commitment to energy efficiency and its leadership in the DOE’s Superior Energy Performance pilot program to help shape the SEP program and other national energy management programs.

"I am proud of our Texas City employees’ achievements in effective energy efficiency measures that reinforce Dow’s reputation as an industrial energy conservation leader and am pleased that we are helping to lead the way as one of the first organizations to pilot the DOE’s Superior Energy Performance program,” said Schmid. "Receiving two certifications in recognition of our tremendous achievements in energy efficiency at our facility makes our success even more rewarding.”

One of the first of four facilities in the U.S. to test the DOE Superior Energy Performance program, the participation of Texas City Operations enabled the program to be piloted at a large integrated industrial site. The site’s isopropanol unit received Platinum Partner Certification with a 17.1% improvement over the 3 year trial period and its energy systems plant received Silver Partner Certification with an 8.1% improvement over the same time frame.
