EMS Technologies to Play Key Role in Hawklink Program, Winning Antenna Production Contract Valued at $6.3 Million
EMS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ELMG) announced today that L-3 Communications Systems - West has named EMS its antenna supplier for the U.S. Navy CDL Hawklink program.
The EMS Ku-band Common Data Link (CDL) antenna system for the MH-60R is suitable for a variety of platforms, providing extended range, high data rates and high reliability. The AN/ARQ-59 System, which includes EMS’s antenna, will increase the Hawklink’s current data rates for the Navy MH-60R to 22 megabits per second at over 100 nautical miles, supporting a range of surveillance, warfare and recovery missions. The system is designed for airborne platforms and features a slot-array antenna using light-weight composites for the positioner.
The initial production contract, awarded to EMS’s Defense & Space Division, is valued at more than $6.3 million. Initial antenna deliveries are set to begin in the third quarter of 2010.
The EMS antenna award follows the U.S. Navy Air Systems Command’s selection of L-3 Communications Systems - West last year for full-rate production.
"Being selected by L-3 Communications Systems - West for the U.S. government’s tactical data link program reaffirms EMS as a leading supplier of antenna systems supporting the growing Common Data Link (CDL) market,” says Richard Clancy, interim general manager, EMS Defense & Space. "This strategic win provides a steady production business for EMS, and positions us well for future CDL platforms.”
Susan Opp, president of L-3 Communication Systems - West states, "EMS was selected to ensure that L-3 can meet the Navy’s requirements for on-time delivery of a critical element of the Hawklink system. The EMS antenna performance is critical to meeting our customer’s requirements for high-bandwidth secure communications.”
EMS’s antenna design for the Navy Hawklink program will also be applicable as the Armed Forces upgrades other airborne platforms to include CDL capabilities. EMS has a broad family of Ku-band CDL antennas that support air, ground, and shipboard applications for the U.S. military.
