distributed to area residents and businesses, features:

of contents and yellow pages index;

fact-filled guide with information on must-see attractions, museums
and theaters, recreation and activities, and improved area and street
maps;

spotlights area restaurants with an A-Z index, menus and maps;
detailed airport and transit maps; and

Is Looking Up” coupons from places such as
the Kennedy Center, Strathmore, the Smithsonian, DC United and more.

Redskins and the Washington Nationals and includes team pages with

statistics, players in the community, field facts and stadium maps.

compartment or briefcase. The companion directory includes many of the
same features as the primary directory, including the Dining Your Way!
restaurant guide, team pages and a coupon section. Also, new this year
the District of Columbia companion directory includes a fold-out map
with street-level detail. According to industry research, companion
directories deliver about 40 percent additional calls to advertisers.1 Stories of Canine Companionship,
Empowering the Community, a Voice for Victims and Second Chances Appear
in the Pages of the District of Columbia Verizon Yellow Pages
In addition, The District of Columbia Verizon Yellow Pages includes five
stories from local heroes featured throughout the book:
National Capital Therapy Dogs, Inc. is a volunteer organization that
uses specially trained dogs and other animals to enhance the quality
of life for patients at hospitals, nursing homes and care facilities.
The animals provide the comfort, recreation and unconditional love that’s
desperately needed by frightened or lonely patients. For a child
enduring hours of chemotherapy treatments, a dog’s
companionship is just what the doctor ordered.
Kenneth Barnes founded Reaching Out to Others Together (ROOT) after
the tragic murder of his son. ROOT advocates victims’
rights and empowers the community to end violence in D.C. and across
the country. Through innovative outreach programs, Barnes has united
police, inner-city youth, local businesses, the media and community
organizations. ROOT’s Guns Aside school
presentations and Youth in Action programs have reached thousands of
D.C.-area students.
Lindsay Trout is a special education teacher and student government
sponsor at South Lakes High School. When she learned that a student
with cancer was unable to afford vital chemotherapy treatments, Trout
inspired the student government to raise $20,000. As an added
incentive, she promised to get a Mohawk haircut after the student body
met the goal. True to her word, Trout bravely sports the wacky cut.
Dr. Ludy Green founded Second Chance Employment Services (SCES),
America’s only employment agency for abused
women. The organization provides assistance with job training, child
care, transportation and housing. Pro bono services from lawyers,
dentists and salons are arranged. Thanks to relationships with large
employers, SCES has helped place over 400 women in steady jobs that
offer medical insurance for them and their children.
