Fairfax Digital Leverages Akamai's Dynamic Site Accelerator to Provide an Enhanced User Experience to Its Customers

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading global service provider for accelerating content and applications online, announced today that Fairfax Digital, one of Australia’s leading online publishers with a stable of more than 30 websites including www.smh.com.au, www.theage.com.au and www.brisbanetimes.com.au, will be using Akamai’s Dynamic Site Accelerator to improve performance of their news sites and provide an enhanced and consistent user experience for its eight million unique visitors. With millions of people turning to Fairfax Digital’s signature news sources during major news events, the network infrastructure can be placed under heavy strain and needs to be able to manage large and rapid traffic spikes. For example, when Steve Irwin passed away in September 2006, the smh.com.au site saw a 100 percent increase in page impressions within 20 minutes of breaking the story. Leveraging Dynamic Site Accelerator, Akamai will enable Fairfax Digital to scale on demand without having to add additional infrastructure. "When it comes to delivering dynamic, personalized and interactive content, we want to ensure that our websites are able to provide superior performance to our visitors, regardless of their location,” said Seth Yates, General Manager IT, Fairfax Digital. "We also want to ensure that our sites can handle huge traffic numbers during significant news events and that they are available to our readers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Implementing Akamai’s Dynamic Site Accelerator solution will allow us to offload 70 percent of traffic to Akamai’s globally distributed network, while improving the user experience.” "Fairfax Digital is Australia's most respected online media organization and we are excited to be supporting its needs,” said Brad Rinklin, vice president of marketing, Akamai Technologies. "One of the challenges our customers such as Fairfax Digital face is making sure their rich and dynamic Web sites are delivered quickly and reliably to their customers, especially when millions of potential visitors are expected to visit these online news portals simultaneously. By powering Fairfax Digital’s Web sites, Akamai will ensure that Fairfax Digital can continue to deliver its leading online news reports during major news events.” Dynamic Site Accelerator is built on Akamai’s globally distributed platform —the most pervasive platform for content delivery and Web site acceleration, comprising 25,000 servers in 70 countries within nearly 1,000 networks. Akamai’s Dynamic Site Accelerator gives performance that is up to five times faster than on original Web infrastructure. Akamai delivers between 15-20 percent of all Web traffic worldwide via this platform—that’s tens of billions of Internet interactions daily.
