Financial Education Benefits Center Warns Young Adults of Increased Risk of Identity Theft
SAN RAMON, Calif., March 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- In our highly digital world, reports of fraud and identity theft are so common that they almost blend into the background of our busy lives. According to a recent FTC report, over 1 million individuals reported cases of fraud and identity theft in 2017. Of those, about one-fifth of them reported a loss of money, and millennials reported losses more often than older adults. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC), a membership benefits company providing health and financial wellness resources, reminds consumers of all ages of the importance of caution with personal information and offers valuable identity theft protection benefits in all tiers of membership.
"The online world is an essential part of daily life for many individuals, so it's important to stay safe," said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC. "It can be easy to forget about the possibility of fraud when the internet has such a positive impact on our lives."
According to the report, 40 percent of consumers age 20–29 reported a monetary loss due to fraud, which is substantially more than any other age group. However, those young adults reported lower losses on average than consumers aged 40 and older. While most of the fraud activity occurred online, those who spend more time on the internet are at greater risk.
Regardless of age, certain online habits can help protect consumers. Scammers are cunning and may go to great lengths to obtain personal information. Consumers may want to think twice before clicking links in emails, sending personal information over social media or public wi-fi, or reusing passwords. It's a good idea to regularly monitor credit reports and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
FEBC members have access to different levels of LifeLock identity protection. That protection includes monitoring personal information and alerts about potential fraud. In case of fraud, they know exactly what to do and they take action quickly to try to minimize damage.
"Identity theft might be something that everyone assumes will never happen to them," said Martinez. "But it happens to so many people each year so it's really important to be informed about it. FEBC's identity theft protection benefit can give our members peace of mind while they're going about their lives, both online and in the real world."
