Business Editors/Education Editors
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 3, 2005--
The largest infant and preschool toy manufacturer, Fisher-Price, Inc., a subsidiary of Mattel, Inc. (NYSE: MAT), and Scholastic Entertainment (NASDAQ: SCHL), a global leader in children's publishing and entertainment, team up in 2005 to create innovative new products that truly help children learn through play with the introduction of the Read With Me DVD! learning system and Ready for School(TM): CLIFFORD(R).
Fisher-Price has had significant success in the learning aisle with such successful and award-winning products as Kasey the Kinderbot(TM), the PowerTouch(TM) Learning System, Learn Through Music, PowerTouch(TM) Baby, the Laugh & Learn(TM) Collection, and InteracTV(TM). This comprehensive line of toys, designed to help kids learn in ways that are natural and intuitive, has been created by Fisher-Price's team of leading content developers and early childhood development experts, and researched at the company's renowned Play Lab.
The new Fisher-Price/Scholastic Entertainment partnership has tremendous potential to fuel the toy business with educational and innovative products that are developmentally appropriate, according to Deborah Forte, president, Scholastic Entertainment, "Scholastic has been a leader in developing and producing award-winning media that help children learn through play. We are proud to partner with Fisher-Price, the leading high-quality toy company for preschoolers. Their commitment to quality and education is a perfect fit with Scholastic."
Play can be the ultimate teaching tool, according to Neil Friedman, Fisher-Price president. "Combining our expertise in developing unique platforms for learning with the nation's most important publisher of children's books and entertainment content as well as a leader in interactive software gives us access to an incredible library of content and skills that we can now translate into exciting new products," he says. "The introduction of Read With Me DVD! takes learning toys to a new dimension with the focus on story comprehension through the unique animation of classic stories, and the Ready for School(TM): CLIFFORD(R) line offers young children a familiar friend to help them learn fundamental social, physical, verbal and problem-solving skills."
The ground-breaking Read With Me DVD! learning system is designed to help children, ages 3 - 7, develop foundational reading skills - with an emphasis on story comprehension and vocabulary. Now, children can enjoy select classic books from the Scholastic library on interactive DVDs designed to build comprehension and vocabulary skills while developing a love of reading. Children simply insert the DVD book title into a DVD player, and a classic story is brought to life on the TV screen. In the primary play mode - Read & Play, words and original illustrations of these classic titles animate on the screen as the story is read aloud to the child. At significant moments in the story, children are encouraged to stay and play on the page where they can learn the meaning of new words and respond to entertaining questions about the characters and key elements of the story. Each story also includes three additional play modes that allow kids to read the story themselves from the book pages represented on the TV screen, watch and listen to the story, and play additional games based on the story's content. In total, each DVD contains more than 100 interactive questions and activities. The Read with Me DVD! learning system includes a wireless, child-friendly remote control, a DVD of a true children's classic book, and a storage case for the DVD. Additional Read with Me DVD! titles will be sold separately for use with the system.
For children 3 to 6 years, Fisher-Price introduces Ready for School(TM): CLIFFORD(R). This interactive plush friend helps prepare preschoolers for kindergarten using a wide variety of activities that build key academic, social and physical skills. With the use of an interactive screen that features Clifford's best friend Emily Elizabeth, Clifford reinforces good manners, while also introducing learning fundamentals like phonics, vowels and consonants, numbers, counting, addition and more. Plus, Clifford comes to life by moving his head and clapping his ears to get preschoolers excited about learning. To activate games and music, kids simply press Clifford's paw to select from one of four modes: Reading, Math, Science or Music. The child then chooses from two related learning games on the interactive screen. Plus, Clifford reinforces learning with helpful hints, rewards, fun sounds, music, dancing and animations, making getting ready for school fun. The Fisher-Price line of Clifford products will also include Write With Lights(TM): CLIFFORD(R), Clifford's On-The-Go Letters(TM) and Clifford's On-the-Go Numbers(TM).
