Genesee & Wyoming April Traffic Rises - Quick Facts

(RTTNews) - Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWR) said that its traffic in April 2014 was 170,513 carloads, an increase of 12,818 carloads or 8.1%, compared with April 2013.

North American traffic for the month increased 14,783 carloads, or 10.8%, primarily due to increased coal, agricultural products and overhead Class 1 shipments. Australian traffic for the month decreased 1,965 carloads, or 9.5%, primarily due to decreased minerals & stone traffic.

Coal & coke traffic for the month increased 5,007 carloads, or 20.8%, primarily due to increased steam coal shipments in G&W's Midwest and Ohio Valley regions, partially offset by decreased shipments in G&W's Central Region.

Agricultural products traffic for the month increased 4,566 carloads, or 22.9%, primarily due to increased shipments in G&W's Pacific, Canada, Central and Ohio Valley regions. The company's other commodity group traffic increased 4,069 carloads, or 65.2%, primarily due to overhead Class 1 shipments.
