Genesee & Wyoming August, Q3 Traffic Rise - Quick Facts

(RTTNews) - Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWR) Tuesday reported a 10.5 percent rise in its August traffic to 179,184 carloads from 162,101 carloads in the same period last year. The company's same-railroad traffic in August rose by 7.3 percent to 174,013 carloads from 162,101 carloads last year. As a result of higher overhead Class 1 shipments and increased coal, agricultural products and minerals & stone traffic, North American traffic was up 9.1 percent to 12,894 carloads. G&W's traffic in the third quarter through August was 356,370 carloads, an increase of 8.9 percent compared with the year-ago period. Same-railroad traffic for the quarter was up 5.7 percent year-over-year. Coal & coke traffic increased 3,999 carloads, or 14.8 percent, primarily due to increased steam coal shipments in the company's Central and Ohio Valley regions.
