Genesee & Wyoming May, Q2 Traffic Rise - Quick Facts
(RTTNews) - Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWR) said that its traffic in May 2014 was 171,391 carloads, an increase of 3,864 carloads, or 2.3%, compared with May 2013. North American traffic increased 6,133 carloads, or 4.2%, primarily due to increased overhead Class 1 shipments, coal, agricultural products and metals traffic. Coal & coke traffic increased 1,886 carloads, or 6.7%, primarily due to increased steam coal shipments in G&W's Midwest and Ohio Valley regions.
The company's traffic in the second quarter of 2014 through May was 341,904 carloads, an increase of 16,682 carloads, or 5.1%, compared with the second quarter of 2013 through May. North American traffic increased 20,916 carloads, or 7.4%, primarily due to increased coal, agricultural products and overhead Class 1 shipments. Coal & coke traffic increased 6,893 carloads, or 13.2%, primarily due to increased steam coal shipments in G&W's Midwest and Ohio Valley regions, partially offset by decreased shipments in G&W's Central and Mountain West regions.
