Genesee & Wyoming Reports Traffic for June 2014 and the Second Quarter of 2014
Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) (NYSE:GWR) today reported traffic volumes for June 2014 and the second quarter of 2014.
G&W’s traffic in June 2014 was 167,727 carloads, an increase of 11,970 carloads, or 7.7%, compared with June 2013. G&W’s same-railroad traffic in June 2014 was 163,019 carloads, an increase of 7,262 carloads, or 4.7%, compared with June 2013.
G&W’s traffic in the second quarter of 2014 was 509,631 carloads, an increase of 28,652 carloads, or 6.0%, compared with the second quarter of 2013. G&W’s same-railroad traffic in the second quarter of 2014 was 504,923 carloads, an increase of 23,944 carloads, or 5.0%, compared with the second quarter of 2013.

Same-railroad Highlights:
The following highlights relate to same-railroad traffic, excluding traffic from the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad, which commenced operations on June 1, 2014.
- North American traffic increased 8,763 carloads, or 6.5%, primarily due to increased minerals & stone, coal and agricultural products traffic.
- Australian traffic decreased 1,501 carloads, or 7.1%, primarily due to an expected decrease in agricultural products traffic. In addition, minerals & stone traffic declined due to a reduction in gypsum shipments and the previously announced closure of a customer facility. These declines were partially offset by increased metallic ores traffic primarily due to increased iron ore shipments.
- Coal & coke traffic increased 2,163 carloads, or 7.7%, primarily due to increased steam coal shipments in G&W’s Midwest and Ohio Valley regions.
- Metallic ores traffic increased 1,560, or 28.2%, primarily due to increased iron ore shipments in G&W’s Australia Region.
- Minerals & stone traffic increased 1,542 carloads, or 7.9%, primarily due to increased shipments in G&W’s Northeast, Central and Rail Link regions, partially offset by decreased shipments in G&W’s Australia Region.
- All remaining traffic increased by a net 1,997 carloads.

- North American traffic increased 29,679 carloads, or 7.1%, primarily due to increased coal, agricultural products, overhead Class 1, minerals & stone and metals traffic, partially offset by decreased petroleum products traffic.
- Australian traffic decreased 5,735 carloads, or 9.0%, primarily due to reduced minerals & stone shipments resulting from lower shipments of gypsum and the previously announced closure of a customer facility, as well as an expected decrease in agricultural products traffic. These declines were partially offset by increased metallic ores traffic primarily due to increased iron ore shipments.
- Coal & coke traffic increased 9,056 carloads, or 11.3%, primarily due to increased steam coal shipments in G&W’s Midwest and Ohio Valley regions, partially offset by decreased shipments in G&W’s Mountain West and Central regions.
- G&W’s Other commodity group traffic increased 7,286 carloads, or 41.2%, primarily due to overhead Class 1 shipments.
- Agricultural products traffic increased 4,927 carloads, or 8.0%, primarily due to increased shipments in G&W’s Pacific, Canada, Ohio Valley and Central regions, partially offset by decreased shipments in G&W’s Australia Region.
- Metals traffic increased 3,601 carloads, or 8.0%, primarily due to increased shipments in G&W’s Northeast and Canada regions.
- Petroleum products traffic decreased 3,302 carloads, or 11.7%, primarily due to decreased shipments of crude oil in G&W’s Southern and Canada regions, as well as decreased shipments of liquid petroleum gases in G&W’s Mountain West and Pacific regions.
- All remaining traffic increased by a net 2,376 carloads.
Other
Historically, G&W has found that carload information may be indicative of freight revenues on its railroads, but may not be indicative of total revenues, operating expenses, operating income or net income. Car movements related to railcar switching, including activities at port terminals, are excluded from our carload information as the resulting revenues are classified as non-freight.
