Intrado VoIP 9-1-1 Peering Service Enables Delivery of E9-1-1 Calls By
Business Editors/High-Tech Writers
LONGMONT, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2005--
Emergency Communications Leader Continues to Bridge the E9-1-1 Gap between Internet Telephony and the Existing 9-1-1 Network
Intrado Inc. (NASDAQ: TRDO), a global provider of integrated data and telecommunications solutions, today announced plans for the deployment of its VoIP 9-1-1 Peering Service as a common access point enabling E9-1-1 Service Providers to deliver VoIP 9-1-1 calls directly into the dedicated 9-1-1 network.
The Intrado(R) VoIP Peering Service is designed to overcome the challenge of interconnecting VoIP 9-1-1 calls with the existing 9-1-1 network. Intrado plans to offer a nationwide VoIP 9-1-1 peering network that will address the needs of those within the VoIP 9-1-1 calling path.
Recently, several major Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) E9-1-1 Service Providers announced plans to allow VoIP Service Providers to connect to the LEC 9-1-1 network to deliver calls to PSAPs. Interconnecting Internet telephony with the existing 9-1-1 network presents many challenges, primarily because the two networks are not directly compatible. For E9-1-1 Service Providers and VoIP Service Providers, enabling VoIP E9-1-1 is time consuming and operationally complex, involving infrastructure deployment and the management of data and multiple interconnection agreements. The Intrado VoIP 9-1-1 Peering Service will provide a solution that reconciles incompatibilities and simplifies interoperability management, reducing the time and costs for implementation of an effective solution.
For E9-1-1 Service Providers, who are predominantly LECs, the peering network will allow them to rapidly enable secure, carrier quality, dedicated access to their 9-1-1 network accommodating all VoIP 9-1-1 calls placed within their service area through a neutral set of 9-1-1 network access points for VoIP Service Providers. In addition to addressing this current challenge of access, the Intrado VoIP 9-1-1 Peering Service will allow E9-1-1 Service Providers to take a decisive step towards enabling future applications associated with next-generation 9-1-1 networks, like the Intrado Intelligent Emergency Network(TM), a robust emergency communications architecture that addresses the nation's expanding public safety needs.
For VoIP Service Providers, this simplified access to the native 9-1-1 network in LEC territories will allow them to cost effectively and expeditiously provide their subscribers with E9-1-1 service comparable to that of the traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN). When used in conjunction with a VoIP Positioning Center service like Intrado V9-1-1(SM) Mobility Service, VoIP Service Providers can then offer their customers full native E9-1-1 call delivery including automatic location identification (ALI) and automatic telephone number identification (ANI) to the appropriate Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) whether their customers are nomadic or static, local or foreign exchange based.
For PSAPs, deployment of this service will eliminate the need to extend support to ancillary emergency telephone lines in order to provide professional, timely response to emergency calls.
How it Works
When the Intrado VoIP 9-1-1 Peering Service is deployed by a LEC, VoIP Service Providers operating within that LEC's region will be able to route their VoIP 9-1-1 calls through a single integrated peering point directly into the LEC's 9-1-1 network. VoIP 9-1-1 calls received by the Intrado peering network will then be routed to the correct 9-1-1 selective router and PSAP in accordance with the VoIP Positioning Center's call routing instructions.
"Intrado has always maintained that anyone should be able to use 9-1-1 in emergency situations, regardless of the communications technology or device used and we developed the first VoIP 9-1-1 solutions in support of this belief," said Stephen Meer, Intrado co-founder and chief technical officer. "Our VoIP 9-1-1 Peering Service further ratifies our position by resolving important issues for 9-1-1 Service Providers and VoIP Service Providers in providing improved access to the public."
Additionally, the issues surrounding VoIP 9-1-1 have been the subject of much debate in recent months and the FCC is expected to issue a ruling in the near future delineating the requirements that VoIP providers must meet. Intrado remains committed to delivering systems and solutions that consider the overall 9-1-1 environment and meet the needs of the public, public safety, and telecommunications and VoIP Service Providers. The Intrado VoIP 9-1-1 Peering Service directly supports this commitment by providing cost-effective options for supporting VoIP 9-1-1 calls.
