Level 3 Vyvx Services to Offer Uncompressed HD Video Transport between New York City, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: LVLT) announced today that, in response to increased demand, it will now offer uncompressed high-definition (HD) video transport services between Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and New York City, giving customers in these cities the ability to transmit live video with a previously unattainable level of clarity and quality.
Level 3 uncompressed HD services will support 1.5 and 3.0 gigabits per second (Gbps) transport with zero compression, ensuring that the video feed is delivered in its native, pristine form. Level 3 Vyvx customers in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. can use the services for transmission locally or between any of the three cities. Level 3 plans to expand city availability, based on demand, in the coming months.
"For more than 20 years, our customers have trusted the Level 3 Vyvx network to deliver some of the largest sports and entertainment events in the world,” said Mark Taylor, vice president of Content and Media at Level 3. "Delivering those kinds of events requires an experienced team and a highly scalable network – precisely the factors that differentiate Level 3’s uncompressed HD services in the market. Our network has the size and scale broadcasters need to deliver even the largest events in uncompressed HD.”
By leveraging the extensive connectivity and scalability of Level 3’s IP/MPLS fiber network, the company is able to deliver uncompressed signals entirely over its fiber-optic network, eliminating the need for encoders at either end of the transmission and streamlining the workflow for broadcasters.
"As a longtime customer of Level 3, we’ve always been pleased with the quality of the Vvyx network and the level of support the team provides,” said Howard Fine, vice president of Broadcast Services at PacTV. "Having tested Level 3’s new capabilities between New York City and Washington, D.C. during a recent medical conference, we were truly impressed with the results and encouraged by the possible future applications of uncompressed HD in our business.”
Level 3 has worked closely with several major broadcasters over the past few years to deliver a number of high-profile sporting events using end-to-end uncompressed HD technology.
For a limited time, Level 3 will be offering uncompressed occasional-use HD services at the same rates as its standard definition services. For more information on Level 3 Vyvx Services, visit http://www.level3.com/index.cfm?PageID=115.
