Magma Software to Be Used by Sun Microsystems and Texas Instruments

    Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 22, 2005--Magma(R) Design Automation Inc. (Nasdaq:LAVA), a provider of chip design solutions, today announced that Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI), and Sun Microsystems will use design software from Magma as part of a collaboration on a next-generation computer system chip set. The design effort will be supported by a suite of design tools from Magma.
"TI has a long-standing relationship with Sun Microsystems producing their UltraSPARC(R) microprocessors and now we look forward to extending that success into the ASIC arena," said Steve Sutton, vice president of ASIC for Texas Instruments. "By collaborating with Magma on the design tools side of the equation, TI is well equipped for challenging designs within systems based on Sun's next generation of chip multithreading (CMT) SPARC(TM) processor."
"Based upon TI's experience with the Magma software, Sun has decided to use Magma for this project. This chip set will enable Sun to maintain its leadership position in the throughput computing market," said Jeffrey Thomas, vice president of CMT Systems at Sun.
"Magma is happy to see two of the world's electronics leaders select the Magma tool set for such an important project," said Roy E. Jewell, president of Magma. "This project represents continued use of Magma products in challenging chips by visionary technology companies."
Magma tools to be used for the chipset include Blast Fusion(R) APX, Blast Plan(TM) Pro, Blast Rail(TM) and Blast Noise(R). Blast Fusion APX, Blast Plan and Blast Noise have been used to address key 90-nanometer design issues such as on-chip variation (OCV) consideration, complex physical design rules and noise avoidance during implementation. As a result, Magma customers achieve expected timing closure and meet their schedule requirements.
