Martian Tops For Second Week; Pan's No Show; Steve Jobs Makes Mark
(RTTNews) - Warner Bros.'s "Pan" did not live up to the hype and could only grab only the third position on its debut week, falling behind the 20th Century Fox's "The Martian" and Sony's "Hotel Transylvania 2," movie and TV researcher Rentrak Corp. (RENT) said.
Quietly sneaking into the arena is Danny Boyle-directed Steve Jobs, which opened in just four theaters in New York and Los Angeles.
The worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of October 11 released by Rentrak on Sunday showed that Pan, which features Hugh Jackman as the pirate Blackbeard and Levi Miller as Peter Pan, collected $36 million worldwide and $15.5 million in North American theaters.
Meanwhile, "The Martian," starring Matt Damon, collected $37 million in North America and $95.1 million globally in its second weekend.
Pan faced stiff competition in the family film segment from Hotel Transylvania 2, which collected $20.3 million from North American theaters and $43.0 million worldwide.
Multiple's Goodbye Mr. Loser came in fourth with $32.4 million worldwide, and Warner Bros' The Intern was fifth after collecting $23.5 million.
Rentrak's Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian said, "Fox's "The Martian" had another stellar weekend taking in $95.1 million from 75 territories and a global tally to date of $227.7 million. Another fall favorite, Sony's "Hotel Transylvania 2" also remains strong around the world scaring up an additional $43.0 million this weekend from 60 territories."
