Museum Of Science And Industry, Chicago's Five-Story, Giant Dome Theater Introduces State-Of-The-Art Projection System

CHICAGO, May 31, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI) is unveiling a new, state-of-the-art projection system in its five-story, wrap-around Giant Dome Theater. MSI's Giant Dome Theater—renamed from the Omnimax® Theater to reflect the change in technology—is the first in Chicago to implement this projection system, and only the second in the world.

This new system—D3D/Christie Laser Dome, an Evanston-based company—uses three different laser projectors that stitch together images, offering a brighter, clearer and more colorful picture. The system also allows for greater content flexibility inside the dome.

"We are excited to debut this technology in Chicago and believe that D3D and Christie's laser-illuminated solution will continue to create the sense of awe that MSI guests have come to expect," said Gil Perez, director of film and guest operations at MSI. "As a world-class institution, we have set the bar extremely high, and we are confident that guests will feel even more immersed in the rich science-oriented topics presented in the movies we select."

To celebrate the new system, MSI is offering reduced pricing throughout June and is debuting Amazon Adventure, a new film that depicts the 11-year journey of Henry Walter Bates through the Amazon rainforest in the 1800s. Also showing is Dream Big, which reveals the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels around the world.

Giant Dome Theater offerings are not included in Museum Entry, but through June 30, guests can purchase additional timed-entry tickets at a reduced price of $9 for adults and $6 for kids ages 3-11 (typically $12 for adults and $9 for kids).

Amazon Adventure will show daily at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. (and 5 p.m. on dates with extended hours) beginning May 29 through the spring of 2018. Dream Big will show daily at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. (and 4 p.m. on dates with extended hours) through February 2018.

In 2016, more than 300,000 people visited MSI's dome theater. The theater first opened 1986 and has shown films showcasing the wonders of space, wildlife, engineering, weather and more, including Tornado Alley, National Parks Adventure, Hubble, Space Junk, Flight of the Butterflies and Great White Shark.

The Giant Dome Theater is supported by Dover Foundation.
