Oshkosh Corporation Sponsors Local High School Students in International Robotics Competition

Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK) is proud to sponsor a team of talented local high school students who won their local and regional events to advance to the finals in an international robotics competition April 16-18 in Atlanta. High school students from Oshkosh West, Oshkosh North and Oshkosh Lourdes, along with Winneconne and Omro high schools, will showcase their specially-designed robot in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) International Robotics Competition. As one of the primary sponsors of the team, eight engineers from Oshkosh also serve as mentors for the students.

The team, called Wave Robotics, competed last weekend in the Minnesota regional, where the first-year team qualified for the international event and won four awards - - Rookie All-Star, Number 1 Seeded Rookie Team, Creativity In Design and Overall Winner of the Regional. The team also won the Rookie All Star award in the Wisconsin regional in March. This year’s competition originally involved 1750 high school teams from around the world and has been pared down to 348 teams for the finals.

The FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of high school students and their mentors to build, program and test a robot in six weeks using a standard set of parts and a common set of rules. The robots have weight, height and other dimensional restrictions. The robots compete in a series of timed three-on-three team competitions with the winners moving on. This 18-year-old program is designed to encourage high school students to explore engineering and science careers.

"We’re very proud of these students who have taken their skills and abilities to problem solve, assess and ultimately meet the criteria with the robot. It’s quite an achievement to be in the international finals,” said Don Verhoff, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and head of technology.

Oshkosh area high school students have been involved in engineering mentoring programs sponsored by Oshkosh Corporation for more than 15 years, a program which Verhoff was instrumental in founding. Each year starting in September, mentors and students meet weekly to explore all the disciplines involved in engineering and ultimately apply those principles in an innovative building project. In past years, students would then divide into six or eight teams and compete among themselves. This year marks an exciting new avenue of international competition and recognition.

"Oshkosh Corporation started this mentoring program to stimulate interest among high school students about the dynamics of engineering, and to pique their interest in pursuing a career in engineering and science. Oshkosh Corporation is proud to say that some students from past mentoring programs have gone on to become engineers, and some are even employed by our company,” added Verhoff.

Oshkosh Corporation mentors include: Jake Fischer, Chris Stack, Chad Dolphin, Travis Orvedahl, Jon Branson, Seth Van Heuklon, Chris Verhoff, and Annette Rantanen. Ellen Bestor is the key coordinator of the project.

High School students participating in the program include: Ripley Ahlborn, Abdel Rhaman Ayad, Alexander Bellman-Greenwood, Zachary Benzaid, Steven Cramer, Wayne Crosby, Megan Daniels, Nilsson Davis, Robert Howard, Benjamin Johnson, Timothy King, Bryce Knickelbein, Tyler Kriegel, Sam Larson, Brian Lawrence, Mark Lemancik, Neiko Levenhagen, Skyler Levenhagen, Kirsten Marshall, John McDermott, William Michels, Niklas Olsen, Andrew Pelot, Megan Raspel, Sean Rimbey, Patrick Rothe, Zachary Ruegsegger, Kevin Toddish, Andrew Warning, Jaime Warnke, and Blaine Wolff

Other major sponsors of the Oshkosh Wave Robotics Team are Triangle Manufacturing of Oshkosh, Wisconsin and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). For more information on the team, go to www.waverobotics.com
