Pacer Stacktrain and Trailer Bridge to Jointly Move Domestic Boxes Between the U.S. and Puerto Rico on Door-to-Door Basis
Pacer Stacktrain (Pacer), a division of freight transportation and
logistics provider Pacer International, Inc. (NASDAQ: PACR), and
operator of North America's most extensive double-stack rail network,
and Trailer Bridge, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRBR), a major operator of U.S. flag
vessels sailing between Jacksonville, Florida and San Juan, Puerto Rico,
have exclusively teamed up to move 53-foot domestic shipping containers
on an integrated, intermodal basis between the United States and Puerto
Rico for customers of both companies.
The companies chose National Maritime Day, which has been observed in
recognition of the importance of the U.S. merchant marine every May 22nd
since 1933 when Congress established it by joint resolution, to commence
this service. Pacer has begun accepting orders from customers.
The alignment of the two transportation providers will result in a fully
integrated wholesale intermodal service that Pacer describes as an
expansion of its recently launched "PacerDirect”
door-to-door service in the U.S. The PacerDirect Puerto Rico service
will focus on West Coast origin freight and provide customers with a
single point of contact to manage all intermodal and vessel details, an
all-inclusive rate quote, and one invoice consolidating all land and
ocean activities. The service is aimed specifically at freight
intermediaries such as intermodal marketing companies, freight brokers,
and trucking lines.
The freight will move in Pacer Stacktrain’s
53-foot containers over Pacer’s double-stack
rail network and will be turned over to Trailer Bridge in Jacksonville.
Trailer Bridge will provide the marine freight service between the
continental U.S. and Puerto Rico, utilizing its existing Triplestack Box
Carriers®, the first vessels in the world
built exclusively for 53-foot containers, and its triple-deck roll-on,
roll-off vessels, the largest such vessels in the world.
Pacer and Trailer Bridge expect the reduction of operational handoffs in
its new integrated Puerto Rico service to result in a more efficient,
competitive door-to-door move to Puerto Rico than has been possible in
the past with non-integrated transportation providers.
Mike Uremovich, chairman and CEO of Pacer International, said the
PacerDirect product reflects Pacer's strategy of increasingly
integrating its own modal and logistics service capabilities with other
growing logistics providers, such as Trailer Bridge, who Pacer feels is
the best positioned 53-foot carrier in the Puerto Rico lane.
"The expansion of PacerDirect into Puerto
Rico,” he said, "is
a great example of how our integrated wholesale offering can bring
greater value to shippers through our bundling and customization of
services provided to our third party re-sellers. With this arrangement,
Pacer will be able to offer integrated moves to Puerto Rico not only for
shipments of U.S. origin, but also for imported ocean freight that Pacer
has transloaded into domestic containers at its own West Coast
cross-docking operations.”
Added Tom Shurstad, president of Pacer International, "We
are already seeing growing acceptance for our PacerDirect product. Since
its launch in January of this year, we’ve
added 20 new intermediary customers, and our volume has more than
doubled month over month. We have effectively expanded PacerDirect from
a few select lanes to all principal U.S. markets in our network, added
Puerto Rico in collaboration with Trailer Bridge, and are looking at
further expansions.”
Trailer Bridge is expected to benefit significantly from the jointly
provided service. "This agreement with Pacer
Stacktrain will enhance our innovative liner service by giving Trailer
Bridge regular access to shipments to and from the Western region,
particularly inbound shipments from the Far East that can now go all the
way to Puerto Rico in the same 53-foot container,”
said John D. McCown, Trailer Bridge's chairman and CEO. "Until
now,” he said, "Trailer
Bridge's principal market for the service has been the U.S. Eastern
region.
"Pacer handles approximately 20 percent of
all U.S. domestic container moves,” he said, "so
we are collaborating with a leader in the intermodal field, broadening
our own market significantly. While this service has just commenced, we
are confident that this agreement will enhance our container volume and
reach. We look forward to providing an update in the coming months.”
Trailer Bridge and Pacer said the demand for exports from the
U.S. to Puerto Rico translates into a large and stable market fueled by
the consumption needs of all of the residents of Puerto Rico.
