Paxar Tags Apparel 'Green' with New Eco-Friendly Labeling Solutions
Paxar Corporation [NYSE: PXR],
a global leader in providing identification and tracking solutions to
the retail and apparel industries, today announced the availability of
its new environmentally friendly fabric labels made of natural raw and
recycled materials. The latest ‘green’
labels include woven labels and woven-edge tapes made from recycled
polyester yarns and organic cottons, and are designed to meet Federal
Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines for recycled products in reducing
energy consumption and conserving petroleum resources.
Apparel makers and retailers are increasingly incorporating eco-friendly
fashions in their product lines, and are taking significant steps to
employ best business practices that lessen harmful consequences to the
environment. Once considered the trend of special brands, the "green”
or "eco” chic
movement is now being taken up by mainstream labels looking to meet the
needs of an expanding market of environmentally conscious consumers.
According to a survey by market researcher NPD Group, about 18% of
shoppers now say they're interested in buying organic, green or
eco-friendly products, up from 5% in 2000.
In response, Paxar has developed and now offers a variety of care label
options to complement this ever-widening interest of brands in providing ‘green’
fashions. New solutions include:
Woven labels using recycled yarn for lettering -- 100% recycled
yarn; label woven with recycled filling yarns combined with standard
warp yarns.
659 double-face woven edge satin label tapes made from recycled
polyester yarns -- 30% recycled content; made from recycled soda
bottles; woven with recycled filling yarns combined with standard warp
yarns.
660 single-face woven edge label tapes made from recycled polyester
yarns -- 20% recycled content; made from recycled soda bottles;
woven with recycled filling yarns combined with standard warp yarns.
661 plain weave organic cotton woven edge tapes -- Made with
60% organic cotton fill yarn.
662 plain weave heavy weight canvas recycled woven edge tapes
-- 100% 2-ply 150 denier polyester used in taffeta and heavier weight
fabrics; made from recycled soda bottles.
663 single-face satin recycled woven edge tapes -- 100%
recycled polyester with typical 70 denier used in satins and lighter
weight plain weaves; made from recycled soda bottles.
6150NCT coated cotton tapes -- 100% cotton in natural beige.
Paxar uses the highest quality yarns for all its products. The yarns
follow steps in the manufacturing process: "post
industrial” fiber waste and "post
consumer” plastics are collected; unique
material conversion is used to chop, grind, melt and reformulate the
waste; 100% recycled chip is formed; chip is melted and extruded; and
first quality recycled yarn is produced. Further, the labels meet or
exceed the same American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists’
(AATCC) wash standards for care labels as standard labels made from
non-recycled yarns: colorfast to wash AATCC Method #61; colorfast to dry
cleaning AATCC Method #132; colorfast to steam pressing AATCC Method
#133; and colorfast to perspiration AATCC Method #15.
"As more companies institute environmental
policies and take on a social responsibility, Paxar is partnering with
its customers to drive initiatives and provide product labeling and
identification solutions consistent with their programs for protecting
the environment,” said Susan Guerin,
President of Paxar’s Americas Apparel Group. "We
recognize the ‘green’
trend as one of the most important industry movements to emerge in years
and we’re working diligently to answer the
growing call for capabilities from brand owners and their manufacturers
to produce the labels they need with new eco-friendly materials such as
organic cotton, bamboo, and recycled paper and plastics.” About Paxar Corporation
