"Weight and fuel economy are key elements businesses are looking to improve,” says Bill Jackson, PACCAR vice president and Peterbilt general manager. "By combining the already fuel efficient and lightweight MX engine with fuel efficient speed control management features, Peterbilt provides customers the ideal fuel economy and performance package.”

Peterbilt offers two speed control management options that can be specified independently or jointly based on customer needs:

  • Progressive Shift Control encourages drivers to shift at reduced engine speeds (RPMs) while in lower gears.
  • Gear Down Protection encourages drivers to shift into higher gears in order to use the engine at a lower engine speed (RPM) when the vehicle is at higher road speeds (MPH).

"When spec’ing new equipment, customers can consult their Peterbilt Dealer to develop a fully optimized powertrain for their operational requirements when ordering the truck,” said Robert Woodall, Peterbilt sales director. "Peterbilt Dealers utilize Prospector® to ensure vehicles are configured precisely to meet the needs of the customer.”

The PACCAR MX engine’s technologically advanced design provides a horsepower range of 380hp-485hp and torque outputs up to 1,750 lb-ft with a displacement of 12.9 liters. It is the only commercial diesel engine to use Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) in both the cylinder block and head for light weight and noise reduction properties. The MX utilizes a fully encapsulated wiring harness and a unique lubrication module that contribute to a B10 design life of one million miles, and by using Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to meet 2010 EPA diesel engine emissions regulations. The fully integrated systems with modular components reduce design complexity, resulting in longer service intervals, increased uptime, lower operating costs and higher resale value.

The PACCAR MX engine with speed control management is available in Peterbilt Models 587, 389, 388, 386, 384, 367, and the Model 365. Speed Control Management options are also available with Eaton 9-13 Convertible 10, 13, and 18 speed manual transmissions.
