Philips Announces Resuscitation Fellowship Award

Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) today announced that it is establishing the American Heart Association-Philips Resuscitation Fellowship Award to identify and support those who engage in resuscitation research. The Fellowship will provide $100,000 over a two-year period to an individual in the early stages of his or her career. "Philips’ generosity will fund essential research in resuscitation science, a discipline the American Heart Association has guided for more than 40 years,” said Kenneth Baker, M.D., volunteer chair, American Heart Association (AHA) research committee. "Despite significant historical breakthroughs like cardiopulmonary resuscitation and comprehensive public access to defibrillation programs, many elements of resuscitation remain unknown. Additional research can lead to thousands more lives being saved.” The AHA will name a recipient from the list of meritorious unfunded applicants who qualify under their peer-review selection process. It is expected that the fellow will devote his or her full time to resuscitation research and work under the direction of an established investigator. "It is our responsibility as a leader in defibrillation and CPR technology to encourage and fund continued research in the field of resuscitation; research that may ultimately lead to saving more lives,” said Michael Miller, senior vice president of Cardiac Care for Philips Medical Systems. "We are committed to supporting this research through the AHA-Philips Resuscitation Fellowship Award and we anticipate this Fellowship will help advance resuscitation science.” The application deadline for the Fellowship is January 4-12, 2007, depending on the state in which the applicant resides. The awardee will be named in July 2007.
