Philips Enables Samsung to Deliver Industry's First UMA Handset for Europe; Philips Nexperia Cellular System Solution 6120 to Power Samsung's Fixed-Mobile Convergence Phone SGH-P200
Samsung is taking advantage of the early availability of thePhilips Nexperia cellular system solution 6120 for UMA to take thelead in providing consumers with access to GPRS and EDGE mobileservices on the same handsets using wireless technologies such asBluetooth and Wi-Fi, which use unlicensed radio spectrum. Consumerswill be able to roam and switch seamlessly between fixed and mobileservices to make inexpensive calls without compromising the service orvoice quality.
"Consumers are looking to fixed-mobile convergence to reduce phonebills and Samsung has invested huge R&D resources to meet consumerdemand," said Kwangsuk Hyun, senior vice president, overseas alliancegroup, Samsung Electronics. "The Nexperia cellular system solution6120 from Philips was chosen because of its power efficient design,improved coverage on wireless and cellular networks, enhanced qualityof service running multiple applications and ease of use with minimalintervention."

Mazur, research director, Gartner and co-author of thereport entitled Fixed-Mobile Convergence gives Network Vendors an IMSOpening. "These individuals would embrace a single converged devicethat removes the present clutter associated with multiple devices,also ensuring their employers improved productivity."

Philips Nexperia cellular system solution 6120 uses the PhilipsBGW211, a low-power 802.11g WLAN system-in-package that integrates thebaseband/MAC, radio, power amplifier and all necessary front-endcomponents to complete the solution. With receiver sensitivity betterthan -89dBm and transmit power over 20dBm EIRP, improved RFpropagation even within a building premises provides consumers withseamless coverage. The support of enhanced Wi-Fi features likeUnscheduled Power Save Delivery allows UMA talk time of over ninehours.
