Plastic Omnium presents its latest innovations at the 66th edition of the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt
Regulatory News:
Plastic Omnium (Paris:POM), the world's leading producer of exterior components & modules and fuel systems, is presenting its latest technological developments at the 66th edition of the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. These developments represent its investment strategy, which is focused on lowering vehicle weight and reducing polluting emissions for carmakers worldwide.
Ten new models from nine different brands that will be unveiled in Frankfurt use Plastic Omnium equipment for bumpers, tailgates, floors, fuel systems or SCR systems. This is in addition to all of the vehicles already on the road produced by the 45 carmakers worldwide that are the Group’s clients and that use Plastic Omnium parts. This international presence with almost all carmakers across five continents is the result of continuous investment in research and development, and the expansion of a modern and efficient industrial base.
Plastic Omnium's presentation at IAA goes beyond the equipment currently available in series production. It includes several prototypes for decreasing vehicle weight, reducing emissions, and providing increased freedom in design for vehicles of the future:
- The LightAir bumper concept
LightAir's active aerodynamic systems can close grills and deploy a lower spoiler at high speeds, lowering CO2 emissions by 3 g/km for an SUV. Using both reduced-density materials and innovative front-end architecture also lowers mass by 10% compared to a traditional bumper. Lastly, LightAir integrates driver assistance technology (camera, radar, sensors, etc.) with protective plastic surfaces that provide de-icing features. This ensures that the technology performs in all weather conditions. It also uses fiber optics for daytime running lights that can withstand small shocks.
- Improvement of the range of tailgates with the Higate Premium and Higate Entry concepts
Higate Premium is a concept designed for future high-end segment vehicles.
It is made up of a composite frame that is reinforced with carbon fiber, lowering its weight by 2 kg when compared to composite reinforced with fiberglass, and by 6 kg when compared to a steel frame. The use of fibers simplifies design, and new electronic and mechatronic equipment is integrated into this concept. Lastly, an active spoiler system that adapts to the car's operating conditions can improve aerodynamic downforce for better handling.
Higate Entry is a new range of plastic tailgates which maintains the same advantages of current plastic tailgates in terms of design freedom, reduced vehicle weight, and modularity , while further optimizing costs.
- Intelligent fuel systems with mechatronics
Plastic Omnium presents TANKTRONIC®, a fully mechatronic solution that optimizes fuel system performances for plug-in hybrid vehicles with pressurized fuel tanks. It offers enhanced diagnostic capabilities, an optimized control of the fuel pump and the use of electronic pressure and level sensing, providing a significant energy consumption reduction.
- DINOx Compact: Broadening of SCR diesel emission reduction portfolio
DINOx Compact is Plastic Omnium's latest innovation in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) that is designed to reduce diesel vehicles NOx emissions.
It is an "all-in-one" mechatronic module, optimizing AdBlue® dosing, heating and sensing functions, to offer carmakers the best performance/cost ratio.
These innovations are the result of a sustained investment approach that reinforces a portfolio of 3,121 patents, and they will continue in the coming years, as Laurent Burelle, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Plastic Omnium explained: "We will continue to seize all innovation and internationalization development opportunities that a growing and rapidly changing automobile manufacturing sector offers. Innovation is the key to our future."
